Re: Am I getting ripped off on the Silk Road?

Hi Fatima,

It's not about your questions but about your outbox messages.
That means the messages were sent, but not read by recipient yet.
When they read your messages those will be shown as 'sent'.

Re: Driving Almaty to Charyn Canyon and Kolsai Lakes

Hi. I know some travellers who rented cars and drove to those places. Driving independently seems getting popular among travellers in Kazakhstan. The road to Castle Valley in Charyn is good. Freshly paved. Usually people mean that valley when they say Charyn. But if you plan to visit other parts of ...

Re: Help ! Fann Mountain Hike Early October

Hi. For other suggestions I can only think of one day trip to Iskanderkul lake (from Dushanbe). There's so called Snake lake near Iskanderkul and it's beautiful in autumn. Also from Penjikent to 7 lakes. I've heard that some guesthouses work in October there. But don't know exactly which ones, sorry...

Re: Help ! Fann Mountain Hike Early October

Hi. According to Artuch website they work till 1st of October. http://artuch.tj/artuch-camp/ But contact them to check when exactly they'll close. If the weather is very good they can prolong working days or close earlier if the weather is bad. The weather in October in the mountains can be differen...

Re: From Zharkent to Almaty

Was it recently? Sorry, can't tell you for sure where to find that bus. From my experience, bus stations can be messy and disorganized in KZ. Buses can stop outside of bus station or have different stand. Usually ask people around and eventually find the bus. I called to Sairan bus station in Almaty...

Re: Viewing a Baikonur launch from outside of the restricted area?

The reason why the tours are expensive is that Baikonur wasn't meant to be a tourist's attraction. They could make Baikonur completely closed and unavailable for visitors. Like there are other objects not available for tourists but could be interesting if the authorities opened them. At least Baikon...

How much does it cost to go inside?
You need to buy a tour from one of the Baikonur tour companies.
The advertisings I saw were about $800 - $1000 per person. Need to apply about 50 days before the dates of your visit.

Re: Silk Road Planning Advice

So much information Julia, thanks. I like the sound of the way that you travelled independently and am pleased to hear that you felt safe during your trip. I'm not sure I could learn Russian but would definitely try to pick up as many tourist-useful phrases of the country that I was visiting. It al...
