Re: Chinese Visa in Ulaan Baatar (Mongolia)
Successfully applied for a Tourist (L) visa here a few days ago. Cost me 67 USD, same day processing with an EU passport. Arrived at 08:45 and there were about seven people already in the queue, mix of Mongolians and westeners. Take a number from the machine after security and head to the counter wh...

Re: Which US$ bill are accepted for foreign exchange?
@Granite2018: all of these ATMs dispensed Som? It's a mix. I found that the yellow cash machines mentioned below rip you off when taking SOM out, charging a 3% commission, compared to 1% when taking dollars. So it worked out better to take dollars and exchange at a bank. If I remember correctly, As...

Embassy report: Mongolian visa in Irkutsk
Applied for a tourist visa in Irkutsk yesterday and collected it exactly 24 hours later. Express (24 hour) processing is the only option here, when the woman asked for 70 USD, I requested standard processing instead of express and was told that 70 USD and 24 hours was standard. I handed in my passpo...

Re: Which US$ bill are accepted for foreign exchange?
There's no shortage of ATMs in Uzbekistan's bigger cities . I had no trouble finding one in Tashkent, Bukhara, Samarkand, Nukus. No problems with Visa, but the only bank that accepted Mastercard while I was there in December 2018 was Asaka Bank.

Re: Any cheap flight options to/from Ulaanbaatar
SCAT Airlines operates a twice weekly direct service between Astana (Nursultan) and Ulaanbaatar, but it ain't cheap. Just checked their website and a flight at the start of June will cost you 240 USD.

I think this has already been cleared up, but just to confirm, I crossed into Kazakhstan with an EU passport yesterday. No visa required, business as usual.

Re: Mobile phone registration law in Kazakhstan
I walked into a mobile phone shop in Almaty yesterday and bought a Beeline simcard and package without even showing my passport. Registration wasn't mentioned.

Re: Transit Visa for Belarus in Bishkek
Hi Pat, not sure if this is still any use to you, but I (EU citizen) applied for my Belarus visa in Bishkek today. Initially they were a bit puzzled and tried to push me towards flying in and out of Minsk (thus getting 30 day visa free). I explained that because of cost, I wanted to cross overland. ...

Re: Dostyk Crossing (Kyrgyzstan into Uzbekistan)
Crossed a few days ago, UZ-->KG. Mashrutka from Andijon to the border was 3,000 SOM, but took a fair while, almost 90 minutes. Uzbek side was a breeze, bags through the Xray and then to the front of the passport queue, which was tiny anyway (very quiet a few days after New Year's Eve). Fairly long q...
