Re: Arslanbob vs. Kara Alma vs. Kyzyl Ünkür

I’ll answer my own question. We took a shared taxi from Kazarman to Jalalabad and convinced the driver to drop us in Kara Alma. It’s a small detour for him and he may or may not agree/charge you extra for this (after some negotiating he did not for us). Make sure you know where to be dropped at Kara...

Re: Latest Tajikistan Stupidity: Bring 10 copies of your GBAO/Visa

We were told that as well and did 10 copies of both our passport and visa. Turned out we never used them. Most checkpoints opened the gates without even us stepping out of the car and the few times we had to show our passport and visa, it took max 5 minutes (and it’s a good opportunity to talk to th...

Re: Registration for Sim card in Tajikistan

When coming from Kyrgyzstan (Osh) on the Pamir Highway, the first chance to get a SIM card is at Murghab in the containers bazaar where we bought ours at Megafon. Very quick, relatively expensive (they have several deals - we took 3Gb for approx. $10; they are all valid one month), you just need you...

Re: Best treks in Pamir Highway

Hello, We have just done the following hikes: - Tulparkul lake yurt camp to Lenin Peak base camp and further on 3/10 (8h but the usual hike takes about 4h return) - Zong to Engels Peak base camp on 9/10 (7h return) - the hike is longer starting from Zong than Langar but the ascent is a bit less stee...

Re: Kyzylart - Bor Dobo border crossing (Murghab-Sary Tash)

Hi, We crossed this border on 04/10/19 with a rental vehicule (self-driving). Easy crossing: no bribe, very friendly guards on both sides (we were invited for tea and lunch at the Tajik side - most folkloric border crossing I’ve experienced btw, worth the experience!). The Tajik guard even insisted ...

Re: Parking overnight, safe at Jizev?

Hi, Quick update here: we parked overnight just yesterday at the spot indicated by Steven next to the bridge and nothing happened to our car. However, we met a driver there, waiting for his tourists, who told us that since last year they don’t leave their car unattended to accompany their tourists a...

Re: Visiting the Aral Sea: Q&A

Hi,

Sorry if the information has been posted elsewhere but I cannot find it: is it possible to break a train journey from Khiva/Nukus to Aktau with a stop in Moynaq to see the Aral Sea?

Thanks!

Re: Itinerary Uzbekistan 14 days - feedback appreciated

Hi again,

Any feedback on this? I’ve been quoted a 2D/1N tour for Nuratau mountains for 145$/pers for 4 people including driving from Samarkand to Asraf and then to Bukhara the next day, 1 night in a guesthouse and 3 meals. Does anyone has any idea for a better price?

Thanks a lot,
François
