Re: China Visa Options

If you are getting it in uk, be sure not to mention xinjiang, i heard they really do not like that word. While the London embassy may be particularly sensitive, I think this is good advice for any Chinese visa application: it can never help you to say that you plan on visiting Xinjiang or Tibet, an...

Re: Camping in Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan

For those reading this thread now, be aware that Uzbekistan seems to now be requiring registration for every night spent in the Ferghana Valley, and that the police will either prevent you from camping or cause big problems at the border if/when they discover you have been camping there.

Re: Caravanistan improvements: suggestions?

On the coding side, I'm not able to navigate to my "control panel" or make changes to my avatar, etc. as I keep getting a PHP error. (E.g., "Fatal error: Cannot redeclare sitesplat_user_avatar() (previously declared in /home2/hopper00/public_html/forum/includes/functions_sitesplat.php...

Re: Itinerary for a 3 weeks trip to UZ and KG

Arslanbob is nice and all, but you don't need more than a couple of days there, in my opinion. Arslanbob-Bishkek is a long drive that will consume most of a day, and dipping back down from Bishkek to Song-kul, Naryn, and Tash Rabat—and then back up to Bishkek—doesn't sound like much fun. The road fr...

Re: Itinerary for a 3 weeks trip to UZ and KG

You don't really need three full days in each of Bukhara and Samarkand, especially if you take the night train. Sure, there are more places to see in Samarkand, and Bukhara is a nice place to linger (in my opinion), but two full days in each is sufficient. Margilon has an interesting silk workshop (...

Re: is the Tajik embassy in DC being difficult?

The "red tape and costs" of getting a LOI may make you forego your visit to Tajikistan? Really? You can get a LOI for less than $20, and possibly for free, or pick your visa up along your way if you don't want to get your vise in DC. So far as visa-related hassles go, this is pretty minor,...

There are a couple of more recent posts on it starting here:

GBAO permit in Osh through Osh Guesthouse

This isn't listed on the GBAO page, but it is possible to get a GBAO permit in Osh through the Osh guesthouse. Obviously it is best to get your permit when you get your visa, but if this isn't possible and you find yourself in Osh and wanting to head south to Murghab, the Osh Guesthouse can arrange ...

Re: GBAO current situation

"Retarded muslim rules"? You seem like a real charmer. I'm not sure how you know it was the guesthouse guys who stole your stuff, as opposed to other guests, but I've found them to be really friendly and helpful when I've stayed there. Unless they no longer have the travel board, it should...

Re: Hotel Caravenserai & Merv

Thanks for the great info. I wonder if the hotel Caravanserai is still operating, or not... When I was there in late 2012 it was operating, but was impossible to find because of badly drawn maps showing non-existent roads, improper directions in the text, and improper location arrows on the already ...
