Re: Viewing a Baikonur launch from outside of the restricted area?
Hi. I've done that. Watched a rocket launch from about 30 km away. Or maybe a bit closer because we took a car and drove from the railroad/road to the steppe closer to the launch point. But still were far from it. My opinion it doesn't worth it. It wasn't too bad though. We saw a long bright tail. ...

Viewing a Baikonur launch from outside of the restricted area?
Hey everyone! I'm currently in Almaty, and trying to figure out if it's worth heading to Baikonur to try and view the Soyuz launch on September 25th. It's far too expensive to actually join a tour, but I was wondering if anybody has tried to just take a train to Tyuratam (Kazakh town right beside Ba...

Re: Chinese Road Through the Wakhan Corridor?
An update on this interesting topic - I was in the Little Pamir in early July and ran into some Afghan engineers working on a road there. They've already created a portion of it in the Little Pamir, and are now doing surveys on the area between Sarhad and Bozai Gumbaz. Here are a few photos I took o...

Re: Mongolia in 10 days... Is it worth?
Travelling on your own in Mongolia with 10 days definitely isn't easy - most attractions don't really have any sort of public transport going to them. I had three weeks there, and I still opted for a group tour organized through a hostel in Ulaanbaatar. The budget group tours aren't exactly like a n...

Re: Buying a water filter in Almaty or Tashkent?
I don't bother with a filter while travelling. Consider just buying some purification tablets - cheap, lightweight, and you can buy them at most pharmacies.

Re: Khunjerab Pass (China-Pakistan border) Q&A
I crossed Khunjerab Pass from Pakistan to China in early June. It was a long day, but in the end I made it. Like at other Xinjiang border crossings, prepare to spend a few hours having your electronics inspected. For a detailed report/guide and some photos, check out this blog post I wrote up on the...

Wakhan Corridor - Solo trekking to Chaqmaqtin Lake (report & guide)
Hey everyone - I just got back from two weeks in the Wakhan Corridor. I did the trek to Chaqmaqtin Lake (low route both ways). I hiked completely solo, no donkeys or anything. I did some meal planning in Dushanbe and made sure that I'd have enough food for the days where I'd be alone on the low rout...

It's not closed, I crossed two days ago and it was perfectly normal.
