Train Zahedan (Iran) to Quetta (Pakistan)

Postby AndyBTravels » Wed May 30, 2018 9:55 am

Hi,

I understand that there is a twice monthly train linking Zahedan with Quetta, The information I have is that it leaves on the 3rd and 17th of the month.

1. Is this train operating?

2. Is it open to non Iranian/Pakistanis?

3. Is an escort required to use the train?

Any information gratefully received!

Hullo, Carafolks,

has anyone taken the Zahedan to Quetta train recently?
What do I need to know if I want to catch it?

If there is no information about this train, what's the alternative to cross this border overland?

Thanks for your legion of replies!

We were there in 2011 with our car but there was a backpacker who did it all overland. I am not sure, but I thought he took the train. However, I know for sure that there are also busses running over this route in Baluchistan/Pakistan. I am not sure about the Iranian side, but I think you will be able to get to Zahedan with a bus.

Somewhere halfway between Bam and Zahedan the military checkpoints start. From that point onwards and also in Pakistan we got police or military escort. So I don't know how it works for backpackers.

Anyway you should hopefully find more recent info.

I recently saw some pictures of the train line where you could barely see the track due to sand and suggesting all service (including freight trains) was cancelled. I have not heard of any foreigner succeeding in taking the train since around 2014 and read one or two reports from people who tried around 2016 and being told that the passenger train has been cancelled. But if you find out more, I'm curious as well!

It seems at the moment the train runs once a week and is only a freight train, no passengers.
