Kazakhstan trains from Aktau or Aytrau to Shymkent

Postby jezza59`` » Mon Jun 09, 2014 6:10 pm

I am taking ferry from Baku to either Aktau or Atyrau. Does anyone know which is best for catching train to Shymkent? I only have Kazakhstan visa so cannot go via Uzbek etc. Also do you have to change trains at any particular station?. Have tried the Railway timetable but no joy with info. Thanks

You cannot take a Ferry to Atyrau, only to Aktau. You don't have to Change Trains.

Steven - I heard from a contact i have in Baku who went to the ferry office and they said the following Tthe ship goes to Kazakhstan once a day. The price for ferry is 81 AZN to Aktau and 100 AZN to Aterau. AZN rate is approximately the same with EUR
Also when you said I could catch a train from Aktau to Shymkent and I dont need to change did you mean the train stays in Kazakhstan for the entire journey? I only have a Kazakhstan visa. I do not want to have to get other visas.Thanks.

This is very interesting. First time I heard of it. Will look out for confirmation there.

Train routes are described on the Train page. You can see there it goes Aktau-Atyrau-Shymkent, not thru Uzbekistan.

AFAIK, sailings still much less frequent than once a day.

Seems to be business as usual... :-|

I think you will get a train to Almaty very soon this time of year from Aqtau.

Big update to the site coming soon, but just as a quickie: I was told sometimes ferries leave from Alat. No further info though. Just keep informing yourself in Baku and you will get out of there eventually.
