I really like Darejani, Momo and the restaurant with the logo of a chicken (Coco?) all on the same street, Kunaev. Prices might be a bit steep for a backpacker’s budget but hey, we are what we eat!

in Almaty, I had 2 good diners in 2 georgian restaurants (I like georgian food), Daredjani already quoted above (85 ul. Kunaeva), and another one on ulitsa Tole-by, between Medecine university and Park na Ploshad Astana, near the guesthouse Silk Way. I forgot its name, but the addresss is very close to 82 ul. Toleby. Food was good and there is a relatively large terrace, very pleasant in summer. I also liked the kazakho-corean restaurant Kangnam, at the intersection prospekt Zhibek Zholu / ulitsa Bayseitovoy, in the pedestrian area near the TSUM. There are also a bunch of cheap and rather good shashlik places.

And a last one, which I dont see on GoogleMaps but it is listed on Yandex Karty : it's a russian-kazakh restaurant named Koshka, on the south side of Park 28 Gvardeitsev Panfilova (near the colourful Zenkov kathedral), which I would recommend if you travel with kids, as they have a little playground with toys (and a few cats) near the tables. Adress is something like 43 or 43b ulitsa Kazybek-by

it seems this restaurant has moved to ulitsa Kazybek-by 85, and its name is now "Kafe Solo Cat". I don't know if they still have the little playground for children, but apparently they still have the cats

We went to Daredjani and we enjoyed it a lot! Also, we've been to Agosto Gastro Bar, near Ascension Cathedral: we went there for lunch, we found cozy atmosphere and good food, they also have a couple of vegetarian options

Restaurant recommendations in Almaty

Post by Lagerfeld »

When I came to Almaty in Nov. last year, my friends there went with me to a German restaurant. They have done this special for me. One more time I wouldn't go to this place, it was very expensive; i paid 100.000 Tenge for 5 people.
But the food & drinks were very good.

Some recommendations from the famous CraigMod in 2024:

Almaty’s status as a cultural hub, though, is increasingly evident in its food scene. “Neo-nomad” cuisine — focused on flour, water and meat — is being championed in hyper-contemporary style; sample it at Auyl or Tör. Cuisine from northwest China is on offer at Lanzhou Noodle, and great coffee at Sensilyo Coffee or JumpinGoat. Gaze upon the patchwork quilt of fruits and nuts splayed out at the Green Bazaar — and then try PlatformA, a large food hall that recently opened inside a Soviet Modernist building.
