Trekking from the Big Almaty Lake to the Valley of the Left Talgar River

Post by Anusiak »

Hi,

I would like to ask if I have to get a permit for trekking from the Big Almaty Lake to the Valley of the Left Talgar River?
I am planning to hike this route: http://trekkingclub.kz/eng/index.php?p=19 but I don't know if I can do it without permit. Anybody knows?

Thank you in advance.

A.

According to the law, there is no permit needed anymore. That's just the law, though. I will be in Almaty in a few days and will ask for experience reports, please remind me to post here if you did not get an answer next week.

Thanks! Do you think you will be able to post something by Sunday? We are flying to Astana on Friday so probably on Sunday we will get to Almaty to start our trek. I would really apreciate your help!

In that case, I will see who I can reach right now. If it doesn't work, there are other good hikes that don't go into the contested area around BAL.

Got a reply: As for BAO and Turistov pass - at the moment these areas are excluded from the list of restricted areas (I mean areas that need permissions to cross over). But, the problem is that areas between them are still there, in "restricted". So, you may have troubles in case frontier guards will meet you somewhere on a way (not on a BAO lakeshore and not on the pass). The chance is not big, but it exists anyway.
