I went to the OVIR in Almaty today. They refused to register me. I only have one stamp on my migration card, which I guess is normal if you enter overland? (fingers crossed) I'll update the thread here when I leave.
On a side note I also emailed the Kazakh Embassy in the US. They said US Citizens on the 30 day visa free scheme do not need to register at OVIR. I would assume that would extend to all nationalities eligible for visa free entry.
Kazakhstan registration Q&A
Re: Registration Kazakhstan not required anymore?
Everything went fine on exit. I took the Almaty - Tashkent train after staying in Kazakhstan for about 6 days.
As a data point someone in the military came around and asked if everything was ok with my interaction with the border guard. It almost felt like he wanted customer feedback

Re: Registration Kazakhstan not required anymore?
Arrived via train from Tashkent. This time I got two stamps (previously I received only one coming in from Novosibirsk). Exited via the train from Almaty to Urumqi more than 5 days later with no problem. Did not need to register with the migration police. I am comfortable to say that there is no need for registration if you hold a passport that is currently allowed visa free entry (Oct 2017).

Registration as turist in Kazakhstan
Hello!
Me and my friend just got here with the ferry from Azerbaijan. When we checked in to the hotel, we asked if they had to write anything on our migration card, which we got on the ferry. They said we might need to the migration office.
We have two stamps, which we got on the ferry when our passports where checked.
THE QUESTION:
Do we need to register, when we have two stamps on the card, and are here from Denmark, visa free?
Thanks in advance, it will really help us out!

Re: Registration as turist in Kazakhstan
The immigration office changed the location. This was my experience making the registration in April.
If you get one stamp in your tourist card, you need to make a registration at the immigration police. If you get 2 stamps, you don’t need it.
I’m Brazilian and I got just one, but a Swiss traveler got 2.
We 2 went to the immigration building in Aktau and just I needed to make the registration.
The address changed again. This is the right direction:
Gps Coordinates
43.642332822864425,
51.176363937556744
Центр миграционных услуг
21-й микрорайон, 1, 1 этаж, Актау
+7 (7292) 42-23-19
+7 (7292) 42-23-17
It’s a new and modern building. They don’t speak English but will help you if you show the tourist card and passport. Easy breezy!

Landed and left the country in Almaty. They told me at landing that I didn't need to register, but only to keep migration card.
At departure no hassles, got passport stamped and left.

Re: Registration as turist in Kazakhstan
Hi guys,
I just crossed the border from Khorgos in China and I'm now in Zharkent, Kazakhstan. I just got stamped into Kazakhstan once on my passport and wasn't given any separate migration card or any other paper. Do I need to register at the OVIR office in Almaty? I am on a British passport.
