Assy Plateau in September

Postby martin_kazakhstan » Thu Mar 09, 2017 1:24 pm

Hi everyone!
I'll be cycling in Southeastern Kazakhstan this August/September, with the exact timing window still depending on external circumstances. I figure that temperatures will be very hot to moderate from August to September, in lower regions. My preferred route however also leads through the Assy plateau, which ascends to 2000-3000 m. I might get there rather late in the year (early-mid September). How is the climate on Assy for cycling and camping in August and September? Are the herders with yurts and animals still up there in September?
Cheers, Martin

Hi Martin,

I would say it depends on the weather. September will definitely be chilly at night, get a good sleeping bag. During the day the weather is perfect, though. Shepherds will still be there early September but probably not late September.

Very happy you want to visit there, I love that place. Also, kymis is top-quality!

Thank you for the quick answer!

If you're familiar with the region, you might give me a hint on another problem. For my "dream" route, Assy comes after Kaindy Lake at Saty. So at the entrance of Assy, there is this red rock formation. One can get there by ascent from Bartogay lake, but it's a huge detour from Saty. I was wondering if I could get there over two smaller towns (Жинишке, Сарытау), which I would suspect are somehow connected with dirt tracks. Some smaller online map services indicate paths usable by bike, Google Maps does not. Possible tracks are very hard to follow on the satellite imagery. Do you know if there are dirt tracks connecting these towns?

Hello, is the good idea to make a 5 o 6 day walk trip from Batan to Saty? We will go there in July. I did not find much about walking there. Could you give me some advice or recommendation guys? Thanks a lot. Vita

Hi Vita,

yes, I think that is a very nice place for walking. Download some maps and do your own planning, there is not much info online.

Hi, I would like to cycle from to Charyn Canyon through Assy plateau tomorrow. Do you think it's possible? Is there still a lot of snow?
Regards,
Magda
