Trekking in the Altai region

Postby zjay » Sat Apr 01, 2017 2:25 pm

We are planning to fly in to Almaty this june, and from there head to the Altai mountains just north of lake Markakol for a 10 day trekking.

Our first option is by car rental (for about 14 days), which is quite expensive. Are there any cheaper but reliable alternatives to travel that big of a distance from Almaty to lake Markakol?

Also any shops in Almaty where we can find bear or pepper sprays?

There is very little traffic going there. Maybe one car a day from Ust-Kamenogorsk. It's just locals, so you need to know them.

Otherwise, get in touch with a tour operator to drive you there. It's a long drive but still cheaper than renting a car for a month.
