Altai hiking in May?

Post by chrissid358 »

Hi,

I will be in Astana by the 12th of May and was thinking of heading to the Altai Mountains for a few days of hiking in the Taiga forest. I've seen that the best time to go is July onwards. Is it worth/possible to hike in this region in mid-May?

Is it also reasonably easy to find local/guides transport once I'm in the region? I don't speak Russian but hope to have some basics by then.

Thank you

Chris

Hi Chris,

I have just cycled down the M52 .. Chusky Tract (sp?) From Mongolia to Barnaul ... It was stunning down to Gorno-Altaysk but consider getting the tick vaccination and any repellant that works for them..They are everywhere!!

Enjoy!!

The snow should have cleared in most places. Watch out for floods though. Atm it is a disaster in Kazakhstan.

No. Very difficult. The region has not seen tourists since the collapse of the Soviet Union. We have found 1 company that can help you http://caravanistan.com/operator/valeriya/

Good luck! It is very beautiful, but not very easy yet.
