Any ideas if it's possible to get an overnight bus from Almaty direct to Karakol and, if so, how I can book/buy a ticket?

You can get an overnight bus in the summer to issyk kul from almaty, but i think they stop at cholpon ata. This time of year, you will have to go through bishkek and take a second transport from there.
