$US dispensing ATMs Naryn?

I'm starting to do some detailed cashflow planning for our Silk Road trip. Clearly we're need quite a few thousand US$ for Tajikistan and Uzbekistan. Not worried about carrying the cash - but just figuring out whether to buy it all in NZ or buy some on the road.

According to Caravanistan you can get US$ from ATMs in Kirghistan and Kazakhstan one or both of which we will get to before Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
How does this work? If I put my NZ$ card into a ATM - will I get a direct conversion from NZ$ to US$ - or will it be via the local currency. Can I actually ask for $500 - and get US$ - or do I need to go via the local Som/Teng ?

That is a good question. I don't know about the exchange rate on those machines. I can imagine it's not going to be amazing. Perhaps it's better to take out money in local currency.

Other option: get it wired through Western Union or something similar - also quite expensive, though. Not sure what would be cheapest.

I'm also not sure if there are these dollar-dispensers in Naryn. Bishkek certainly, but Naryn? Unsure.

If things have not changed, you should also get $ in Tajikistan. At least in former trips I was able to extract some at the airport in Dushanbe and in 2013 we also got tons of them in Khorog (ATM and bank, the bank was cheaper for larger amounts).

The banking system in Tajikistan has been collapsing for a while now, it is very difficult to get dollars anywhere (even in Dushanbe)
