Hello lovely people
We are facing a lot of difficulties in getting the IDP from local authorities in India (damn bureaucracy!)
What are our other options? Is it possible to get some local authorised / notarised document which can work out? HELP PLEASE!
What if we decide to risk it and just go with our driving license? The license is in English, with a photo ID too.
Thanks so much in advance. This has been really frustrating for us.. Would appreciate any inputs.

I think you can go without. I have one, but every time I have been stopped I have never shown it. It would be quite useless since no one would be able to read it: it does not have any Russian wording on it.

Not exactly what I remember: I need to check later at home, but I'm pretty sure that my Vienna 68 IDP has 1 page in russian/cyrillic.steven wrote:I think you can go without. Anyway, I always had it with me, but I was never asked to show it in years of travelling in Central Asia.

the are two kinds of international driving permit (licence): based on geneva (1949) and viena (1968) conventions. there is another one licence based on paris convention on traffic of the year 1926 but i suppose there are not too much drivers using it ;)
usually both have russian (as well as english, spanish, german, french and your country) language version but covers (conventions are signed by) diferrent countries.
for central asia use geneva.
note: the permit is released for 3 years only. usually it is a 8 pages (6 languages plus your data and photo plus cover) booklet (different in details), but in some places issued as a card (e.g. united nations).
but as steve wrote - you really don't be afraid.
usually your country's license is enough.

Reviving an old thread - Does anyone have any experience of applying for an International Drivers Permit online?
If so, what company/website did they use?
Was it accepted in both Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan?

You can only get a legit IDP issued by the authorities of your country (so it depends on them whether you can apply online at all). There are a number of websites by private companies claiming to issue you an IDP. Some of them are faking documents, others are selling you a mere translation of your national driving license. Both are a scam and should be avoided.
