Isyyk Kul to Uchkurgan / Uzbekistan

Postby robert » Wed Apr 25, 2018 9:46 pm

Hi,

I'm planning to drive from Issyk Kul to Uzbekistan (via the border crossing at Uchkurgan), and was wondering if the road through Chaek is an option. I'm planning to do this in June with a 4x4 car. How much quicker or slower would this be compared to going through Bishkek? Are there any other viable rout options?

Thanks and best regards,

Robert

I haven't taken this road myself so was hoping someone else would answer. Should be possible in my unexperienced opinion. It will be quicker and more interesting than going through Bishkek.

Quicker? I'm not sure.
More interesting? Yes, definitely.

From Chaek, to reconnect to M41, you have to turn north up to Suusamyr.
They are building a new direct road to Kazarman, but I don't think it will be ready soon.

Hi,

thanks for your replies.

We thought about going via Naryn and Kazarman as an alternative. Any experience with that?

Thanks,

Robert

Very nice road indeed. A 4Wd is definitely advised. But a big detour if you are going to Uchkurgan, crossing at Osh will then be more logical.

East of Kazarman you can also drive north of the river, which seems to be more interesting (but again, not faster)

We will come from the south, so we could go from Osh over Kazarman (with our 4wd)
From there, would it be interesting to continue to Naryn and North from there or via Song Kul?

Depends what you plan to do in Naryn region. Naryn itself is not an interesting place, but there are lovely places around like Tash Rabat, At Bashy and Eki Naryn.

You should definitely visit Song Kul sooner or later.

Thanks for all the tips.

We finally took the road through Song Kul and Kazarman to drive to Jalal Abad. The road was mainly unpaved, although in good to acceptable condition. There wasn't much traffic at all, so the average speed was quite ok, maybe 60-80 km/h.

Thanks for that, Robert! Do you think Song Kul to Kazarman would be possible without a 4WD? Sounds like that from your description.
