Do you need a permit for certain destinations in the Chatkal mountains above Tashkent? I haven't been able to find out a lot of details. But here is a long thread from an Uzbek trekking forum about the question. Sadly the discussion ranges from 2014 to 2017, so not much use now. Just for historical context - it was complicated then, and I think it is still complicated now.
