I'm planning to visit Uzbekistan in March or April of 2024, and am looking to put together a reading list to prepare for the trip. I'm very interested in the architectural and historical sites, but just as much in the current political scene, Islam In Uzbekistan and contemporary Uzbek culture - including music. Any suggestions for books, articles or other resources? Thanks! PS. I've read "Sovietistan" and found it fascinating.

Thanks for the suggestions; I can't wait to dig in. I also found The Vanishing Generation: Faith and Uprising in Modern Uzbekistan by Baglia Bukharbayeva.

My reading full recommended list for Central Asia, divided by topic, is here: There are about 150 or so books on it, so hopefully you'll find something interesting!

I second the recommendations for Hamid Ismailov's novels, particularly The Devil's Dance for which he won the 2019 EBRD Literature Prize.

Sophie - I clicked on the icon included in your reply (for Amazon UK), but it did not connect me to your reading list. Is there another way to acces it? Thanks! - Cate

Adeeb Khalid's Making Uzbekistan and Central Asia. The latter covers the same material as the former in less detail.

Eurasianet has contemporary, mostly political news.

The former Calvert Journal has contemporary cultural content.
