Getting from Bukhara to Dushanbe

Postby Traveller11 » Tue Jan 24, 2017 1:23 pm

Hi Folks!

I wonder if anyone can provide me with any details for getting from Bukhara to Dushanbe please?

Trains are a 'non starter' I understand.

I am really interested in going direct as trying to go by Plane involves all sorts of 2 or 3 stop flights and a very long time to do the trip with possibly stopovers on the way.

So type of travel, duration and cost would be most helpful please.

Hi Traveller11.

Most people want to go from Samarkand to Dushanbe, and this is well-explained on the border crossings page for Uzbekistan. For Bukhara, I am not entirely sure what would be the best option.

First, get a bus/shared taxi to Qarshi. From there, either one to Boysun or to Termez. From there, another bus/shared taxi to Denau. Once across the border, taxis will be waiting to get you to Dushanbe.

Now, I have never been to Boysun myself, and I do not know if there will be transport available to go to Denau. Otherwise, it might be quicker to go to Termez first, from where there will be more transport options. This is the question mark. You have to find out beforehand in Qarshi, gamble, or charter a taxi from Qarshi straight to Denau.

Hope that helps!

Hi Steven,
Thank you for the information.

My wife and I are planning a trip which I mentioned sometime previously as we really enjoyed our 2 weeks in Kazakhstan, 1 week in Astana followed by a week in Almaty.

So having put a plan together to come back for longer (1 month) but also to include time in Uzbekistan, Tajikistan & Krygystan my first attempt fell flat as it was impossible to get from one place to another (Can't remember which one exactly) while it also meant going back on ourselves a number of times to get connections to move further forward (Hope you follow that!)

I then re-jigged the plan to move around in what I was hoping was a logical route (Not having to go backwards to an already visited place!) and having checked out 'How to get there options' for each of the stages found that Bukhara to Dushanbe was the 'problem'.

Although Dushanbe is the only city in Tajikistan that we intend to visit, it looks like I will have to consider going back to Samarkand to get to Dushanbe if that is the best option.

You don't really have to go back, as you can go straight from Tashkent to Bukhara by overnight train, then go to Samarkand. This actually saves time, as you don't lose any sightseeing time between Tashkent and Bukhara.

Hi bwv812,

Thanks for your information,

While the plan for my proposed trip is below, it seems that I am going to end up going further away from Dushanbe to eventually get there, see below

Central Asia Possible Itinerary (Version 4)

1) Travel in Kazakhstan:
Date: Wednesday 13/09/2017. Travel from Alma-Ata 2 to Chimkent by OVERNIGHT TRAIN
Train 011X.

2) Travel between Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan: Border Crossing Point!!
Date: Sunday 17/09/2017. Travel from Chimkent to Tashkent by TRAIN
Train Number 321T

3) Travel in Uzbekistan:
Date: Thursday 21/09/2017. Travel from Tashkent to Samarkand by HIGH SPEED TRAIN
Train Number 004

4) Travel in Uzbekistan:
Date: Monday 25/09/2017. Travel from Samarkand to Bukhara by TRAIN
Train Number 010

5) Travel between Uzbekistan – Tajikistan: Border Crossing Point!!
Date: Friday 29/09/2017. Travel from Bukhara (BHK) to Dushanbe (DYU) by PLANE

Consider travelling from Bukhara back to Samarkand (SKD) then going on to Dushanbe from there as this stage seems to be very difficult in trying to go there directly….

While……
You can also take the train. The Tashkent-Samarkand-Denau service takes about 15 hours (11 hrs from Samarkand) and runs from Tashkent on odd days, and from Denau on even days. From Denau, it’s 40km to the Tajik border by taxi, and then another hour to Dushanbe.

6) Travel Between Tajikistan and Kyrgystan:
Date: Wednesday 04/10/2017. Travel from Dushanbe (DYU) to Bishkek (FRU) by PLANE **
(Travel must be on a Wednesday, as this is the only flight!)

7) Travel Between Kyrgystan and Kazakhstan:
Date: Tuesday 07/10/2017. Travel from Bishkek (FRU) to Almaty (ALA) by PLANE **

Hi,

sorry for the late reply. I would stick with my previous idea. Get a ride to Qarshi, then to Termez or Boysun, then to Denau, then to Dushanbe.

You can split it up in 2 days and see something of interest along the way. Both Boysun area and Termez are interesting I think.

Does this answer your question? Otherwise, what exactly is your question?

Hi Steven,

Thank you for the suggestion.

As you mentioned 'ride' then as we plan to travel with 2 medium sized hard shell suitcases, and 2 smallish rucksacks then if the 'rides' would be in shared Taxis I would have concerns about being able to fit the luggage in, especially if it was to sit across our knees!

While I would feel more comfortable if the transport between the places you mentioned was by Coach/BIG Bus (Not Mercedes Sprinter with 10 seats as limited luggage space again)

I think you may have to adjust your expectations. You aren't going to find modern long-distance buses or even Mercedes Sprinters on the road. You will find built-in-Uzbekistan Daewoo/Chrysler share taxis that are dirt cheap by Western standards. If you need more space, simply charter the entire taxi—it will still be very cheap.

Sorry I gotta question your luggage - why on earth do you need so much? Why would you spend so much effort to carry laundry with you? Get your luggage down to carry on size and you'll literally free yourself. Central Asia has laundries (I assume, havent' been there yet, but the rest of the world does!)

I think 2 medium-sized suitcases and 2 rucksacks can fit in the trunk of a Nexia. You can find a picture here: https://www.drive2.com/r/daewoo/1161065/
