Thanks for the heads up, olmo. Seems like some hotels are taking advantage of the new law. Just stay away from them, I am sure most hotels do not have this type of pricing.

Usbekistan dropped the fixed exchange rate with US-Dollar this September (see the other thread in this forum). Has this changed anything concerning paying at hotels / hostels?

Answer to my previous question:
The hotel I'm staying only accepts Som. The manager told me that all hotels should only accept Som from now on, and USD isn't accepted anymore.

Hi Folks,

Currently we are in Tashkent and the Hotel Manager has confirmed what 'robert' has said.

The ruling about paying for your accommodation in USD has been REVERSED so now you can only pay in UZBEK SOM.

So if you brought a load of USD with you, then it's off to the Bank to change it!

Having said that we changed 20$ yesterday in a bank whose exchange department was open after 17:00hrs and we were not asked for any Passport!
BUT we were given an authorised receipt for when we leave the country as I understand you have to prove that you are going with less foreign currency than you brought in!

I was in Uzbekistan earlier this month and my hotels in Khiva, Bukhara, and Samarkand all accepted USD without problems...

Any updates on this? I'm trying to work out how many dollars I need to take with me.

I think nowadays you can pay either in $ or som. Main issue of ATMs not being sufficiently stuffed can still be a problem, but I haven't heard much of it recently, actually.

I should check out what is going on regarding that. Definitely take at least one hundred to be on the safe side in case the first ATMs you encounter are empty. Uzbekistan is a very safe country, no need to feel afraid about being robbed.

Som or dollars are both accepted at that day’s exchange rate, at least in the hotels I stayed at in Samarkand, Bukhara, Khiva and Nukus.

Yeah ditto with ejcraft. Every hotel I stayed in was happy to take either som or $. 'up to you'...The exchange rates they offered were fair too, in that there didn't really seem to be any financial advantage to pay with one or the other.

In July 2018, differential pricing for foreigners was still common.
