Hotel payment only in US dollar?

A rule was launched in early 2017 that hotels could only be paid in US dollar from now on. It was furiously fought against by the local tour operators and I thought it had disappeared.

It now seems this might only be so for local tour operators. Individual tourists still have to pay in $$ and cannot pay in Uzbek sum. Or not? Looking for more information. Your experiences are most welcome.

Thank you!

Just got back from a trip in Uzbekistan. I believe we paid in USD at all our hotels and hostels. We didn't really ask for paying in Som though; we brought plenty of dollars so it didn't really matter much to us.

Hello Steven,

Indeed, they got this new law launched in 2017.
So most hotels (with official license for registration) will only accept USD.
They told me they need to bring USD to their bank to do registration ... And before, some people were paying them in SOM with official rate (bad for hotel).

In some small cities (Boysun for exemple), we pay in som (way more cheaper !) and we get registration without official stamp (but no problem for us since they didn't check it when we exit).

Regards,

Benjamin

Hey guys,
I just got confronted with this problem during my booking process.
Is there anyone who tried just paying with Sums?
The Dollar is not their national currency, so it should be possible to pay in Sums only, right?

In case you´re arriving at the airport, exchange Euros to Sums and try to pay with them.
What´s going to happen then? Dollar is not my national currency either...

Thanks for your answers,
Cheers

I was in Uzbekistan last month and we did have to pay in USD cash at every hostel/guest house. Bring plenty of USD in crisp condition with no tears. Be aware that you could be fined if you leave the country with more foreign currency than you entered with, so if you do take USD from an ATM don't take more than you came in with (or save your receipt). Also, only exchange your money on the black market. You get a much better exchange rate than the official rate... and this is why they only accept USD for hotel payment.

Confirming that all hotels in Uzbek ask for payment in dollars. One place even had the government law on a piece of paper behind the reception just in case you tried to argue.

We tried to pay (part of) the rate in som at two places. One used the same black market rate they had used to sell dollars to us (8100 at the time) which was fine with us, wheras another place used a much worse rate (8300 to 'buy' USD when they were selling USD at 8000) if we wanted to pay in som.

Darn - so the country has just got pretty expensive then - what are they asking for a guesthouse or cheap hotel now in US$ - are the prices in Lonely Planet approximately right?

Requiring payment in dollars doesn't necessarily make it more expensive.

Rates have basically always been in dollars, with payment accepted in sum. Budget places have long used black market rates for sum, so it has been no advantage to pay in sum or dollars. Only in higher-end/government-run places has the conversion to sum been done at official rates, meaning that it was cheaper to pay in your black-market sum.

Does anyone have details on why the foreigner prices are so extortionately high? 70000 SOM / $20, 105000 SOM / $28, 80000 SOM / $44 are some examples from two hotels here (both for two persons - prices are usually quoted per person or room for locals, always per person for foreigners).

I assume they may have to take dollars, then convert them at the official exchange rate? $28 would make 112000 SOM (at 1:4000), so this would explain the double prices (vs black market rate) However, we came across several places closer to the last one mentioned, with regular prices in som and just several times as much for foreigners even with the "official" exchange rate.
