Nice Hostel Scam in Tashkent

Postby Traveller11 » Thu Oct 12, 2017 8:13 am

For those people travelling on a budget there is a nice scam being operated by a Boutique Hostel called Sunrise Caravan Stay in Tashkent.

Reception advised us that the Taxi Cost from Sunrise Caravan Stay to the Airport would be no more than 15,000 Som, and then the following day announced that the price had ‘Gone up to 20,000 Som as the Taxi had to pay for the Car Park ticket at the Airport’

That was totally incorrect as the following at the Airport is a fact!
Any car/taxi has 15 Minutes to Drop Off Passengers FREE of CHARGE before exiting the Airport Car Park, which is plenty of time to get in, offload and get out.

After being advised of the price hike, we made it clear that we did not have the extra 5000 Som difference and in fact only had 2,800 Som left along with the 15,000 Som.
As we did not know about the 15 minutes drop off time limit we passed over the 2,800 Som and were advised by Katerina on reception that it would be 'OK'.

The driver who we think was a relative dropped us outside the airport away from the car park and drove away quickly before anyone came, while keeping the additional money.

While on the way to the airport he nearly managed to propel us through the windscreen as he slammed on his brakes to just miss a group of pedestrians making their way across the road at an official crossing point!

Nice SCAM from Sunrise Caravan Stay.!!

Sad to read that as I always had a very positive view of Sunrise Caravan. Will need to look into this. Thanks for sharing! Hope your wife is feeling better, Ian!

Wife is coming back together as Imodium is now acting as it should. We think the first packet that we bought from the Pharmacy in a Polyclinic were not Imodium as they did not produce the desired results even after quite some time of taking them.

When we then went to a different Pharmacy the Pharmacist advised us by body language and a severe shaking of finger that they were not Imodium Capsules and then showed us Capsules that had Imodium 'printed' in the body of the Capsules while it seems the 'infection' took quite some time to resolve as it is only now that it is diminishing in it's ferocity.

Not the right subject to talk about really but we met a number of 'Westerners' who were 'caught' in Uzbekistan with this 'problem' while in other countries it was not encountered.

Good luck with Sunrise, I also got the distinct impression due to another problem when were were advised by the same receptionist who increased the taxi fare to the airport. That Sunrise could send a car to the train station to meet us which also did not happen.

The blame was placed on the second receptionist for 'forgetting' but there is no sort of 'hand over' from one to the other of items or actions that need to be performed the following day, and when it was suggested it was immediately rejected.

Hey Ho another day in Paradise is looming!

I am also surpised about bad review on Sunrise hostel, cause I made it there and liked it after bad experience with Topchan hostel (many travellers' faourite), but didnt use any taxi service.
I had bad experience with nearly all the taxis in UZ though and I would say be prepared for that. They overcharge you as much as they can since the normal price for locals is extremely cheap for us. Would you ever pay it in your home country?
I somehow understand it but still do not like to be cheated. In Tashkent once moving from one hostel to another, which was like 3-4 km max I was told from the hostel receptionist the price would be 12000 SUM, the taxi driver upon arrival showed me kind of phone app that counted for more then 23000 SUM. I didnt pay that much sayin he was crazy and cheating, but still paid too much for this ride since was not aware of the prices.
Once I got to know the regular price for locals is like 3000-5000 max I never paid more, but I speak Russian which helps obviously lots.
I would say, be prepared to pay a bit more for taxis and negotiate.
