Smoking in Uzbekistan: a lot?

Post by Emily2 »

I have just been asked to travel to Uzbekistan for a conference in April. I am eager to say yes but will only do so if I can append independent travel to my trip. I am allergic to cigarette smoke, mildew and mold. I can manage some exposure with medication but I am wondering how pervasive smoking is. I have traveled in Russia, China and Asia, which was challenging but my work environment and my hotel gave me respite. Are the trains really smoky? Do people smoke in offices? I assume restaurants are smoky. If anyone could give me a comparative sense, that would be great. I think all of the conversation about medication helped me with those questions.

I would say smoking is restricted to outdoor environments in a professional context. For restaurants, you do need to be a bit more picky. Smoking on the train is not allowed.
