Climate in Kyrgyz Tian Shan in summer?

Post by velowallah »

I'm considering a bike trip in the Tian Shan of Kyrgystan, south of Issyk Kul and towards Naryn and Chatyr Kul, and wondering how much rain I can expect in July and August. The climate charts I've looked indicate minimal precipitation, but most blogs I've read mention seemingly frequent rain and downpours, and I'm not keen on spending days being rained on. The landscape strongly pulls me though. Any comment on what exactly I should expect on most days?

From my personal experience: it hardly ever rains in summer on the plains. Of course, in the high mountains, there are more downpours. These are always temporary. Clouds tend to build up in the afternoon. Unless you dissolve in rain, I don't think it should be a factor in your decision. It's never been a big deal in my opinion (I'm from a rainy country, though)
