Hiking in Uzbekistan

Post by johansolberg »

Hi everyone,

I am going to Uzbekistan this upcoming may, and really excited about it.

I was just wondering if you need any permits to hike solo in Uzbekistan? I have been looking at several 2-3 day hikes that seem great. Also, how is the system for camping? May I pitch my tent anywhere in the wilderness?

Thank you, and I hope to get some intel

Johan

Hi Johan,

camping is allowed anywhere, see http://caravanistan.com/accommodation/uzbekistan/

There are places that are restricted to foreigners, but the exact bounds of the restricted areas I am unaware of. Parts of the Chatkal-Ugam reserve (the finger sticking into Kazakhstan) and the Zerafshan range on the border with Tajikistan (also still has mines from the civil war) are places you could get in trouble.

So ask perhaps a tour operator specialising in hiking. I have never gone into the detail - if you find out more, please let us know!

If you have a gpx track or a hike report on your blog, would love to read it.

Oh, yes, i wanted to send you more descriptions of central asia treks, but i am too busy with my blog (and travelling of course) , thats just in Slovak language... When i come back home, i promise... But regarding Chimgara- two trails are on maps.me- one through valley, suicidal on the end of may, although i am still alive, but it was the stupidies thing i have ever done, too steep, snow. Second one through ridge, nicer, easier
