Where to buy maps in Almaty (or Urumqi)

Post by niche »

Hello

I'm cycling westwards from China and I'm about to embark on the stretch from Xinjiang into Kazakhstan.

Does anyone know if there's a good shop for maps on this route - presumably Urumqi or Almaty would be the best bet?

I'd like to pick up maps of Central Asia, Iran and Turkey - my probable route to Europe.

Many thanks,

Nick

2 shops are well-known

Geoid map shop: Kyrgyzstan, Bishkek, Kievskaya 107
GEO map shop: Kazakhstan, Almaty, Satpaeva 30B

I don't know about Urumqi. Pls let me know if you found what you were looking for in these places!

Also useful perhaps: http://caravanistan.com/map/

Thanks for the reply!

I'll let you know i I find what I need on the road, then, but I may get maps sent ahead to a friendly hostel instead.

What I'm more concerned about is Kyrgyzstan. There are a number of ski resorts listed on Wikipedia and elsewhere as being in the country, but are these places where I could rent skis / stay the night? Any idea on the best way to reach these from Bishkek or Karakol?
