Phone checked at border

Is it generally just land borders that check photos on phones (and potentially install spyware)?

This is putting us off getting a tourist visa and travelling the country extensively.

We are now looking at taking a ferry into Shanghai Port, then flying out of Shanghai, if anybody knows if these border crossings are invasive at all?

Sorry for butting in... I'm intrigued by your "Ferry to Shanghai"... where are you coming from? I've been looking at ferries arriving anywhere on the South or West coast of China and I'm stumped.

Yes, because I was looking to leave from Shanghai port on CMA-CGM cargos (to go back in Europe) and it's postponed untill 2024.
