Update September 2023:
ExpressVPN, which is recommended by most experts, doesn't work (although it can connect, it is constantly reconnecting, during which the internet is blocked...). The support team says they know the problem and are working on it...

Did you try a different connection protocol than "automatic" like OpenVPN TCP?

Hi,
Astrill VPN is the only VPN recommended by all expats, I believe it works in Xinjiang too.

I am currently in Xinjiang and am using LetsVPN app (paid one month service). Works perfectly so far with no problem.
