Pakistan to Tajikistan (through China)

Hi all. Long time lurker first time poster.

I am solo motorbike rider on New Zealand/EU passport.

I want to exit Pakistan through the Khunjerab Pass(Northern Pakistan) into China and then enter Tajikistan through the Kulma(Qolma) Pass. The distance is only 200km from one border to the other which means i can cover that in a couple of hours. I have no interest/intentions hanging around in China.

- Do I need a guide for these 200km?
- Approx costs?
- Any other ideas how to get to Tajikistan from Pakistan?

I am riding from New Zealand to Europe and this is the only route I can take.

Many thanks!

Hi Kiddo,

Yes, you need a Guide.
It will take you at least 4 days, you have to travel to Kashgar to get the documents done.will Costa about 1850 $.
Alternatively your bike could bei loaded onto a Truck, will make it abit cheaper and safe a day

Of course yoz could go from Pakistan to Iran an Themen Up North Info the 'stans.

So how do I know all of this?
We're riding the opposite direction, from Europe to Nepal.
I figured all of this Out in the last few months

..... But maybe there is a way i did not find.

Good luck & enjoy your Trip.

Dave

I read that China wants to help Pakistan and Central Asia trading, and will be makijg a trade route between Pakistan and Tajikistan. It could verywell be this red route. Which means you might get a good road or a lot of construction mess.

I also want to travel by road from Pakistan to Tajikistan (through China).
If I have already have gained a Chinese visa at home (Australia) do I need to travel to Kashgar for further authorities/permits ?
In anticipation of your advice I thankyou.

Yes, if you want to drive a vehicle through China you will need a guide/company to organise all the permits, temporary licences, etc.
The process is expensive and takes about 60-90 days — so make sure you plan ahead.

I'm part of a group with the guy who started this thread, we are crossing Pakistan to Kyrgysztan from 19—22 August. If you do the crossing alone it will cost up to 2000 USD, so it's much better to join a group!

If you're interested in joining us (or if you just want some more info/quotes/guide recommendations) you can join our fb group here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1990667254572822/

There are two other fb groups that are good for info: "Overlanding Asia" and "China Transit for Overlanders"

Good luck :)

Thank you Swamp Gum.
I am not proposing to drive my car (or any other) but use taxis / buses.
Do you know if I need to travel to Kashgar for further authorities/permits ?
Cheers; Richard

Folks in this thread are talking about self-driving in China, which requires a guide and permits. You don't need any permits to simply travel in Xinjiang as a tourist: that applies only to Tibet.
