"you people are dogs"

Post by mazeno »

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0PnWUzHWPYI

the situation follows:
a british mom and her son on a trek somewhere in nepal.
a teahouse.
a tea (or two).
drinking.
how much.
150 rupies (1,5 usd).
the affray follows.

and i'm not surprised at all.
(of course - the "mom" didn't ask before about the price, she didn't know or just forgott - it doesn't matter, so she was surprised with such high price. and it is not true that "the flour must be taken from the valleys to the mountains and it is expensive". a chyapati on the main trekking route costs 300-500 rupies, while in a remote valley where you cannot meet any tourists the same chyapati stays for 10-20 rupies. but it is not the main score in this story.)

in the 90's i guided some small trekking groups to nepal - i see an average travelling guy that times was "a bit" smarter than today. now his smartphone is "a bit" smarter.

that days a traveller was focused on the "terra incognita" he was visiting.
nowadays a "traveller" is focused on himself.

(notice the difference between traveller and "traveller".)
nowadays just want to make a "selfie" and put it on facebook. i see guys turning arround the world mostly taking selfies and sliding their fingers on their smartphones. they don't understand how to operate with the locals. not even "they don't know" (can get known from the books e.g) - they don't understand (e.g. why and how to reasonably spend money that looks like a fortune for locals, how to bargain and why bargain - for locals bargaining is a way to talk, to get know other people, how to communicate with locals - talking and body language, etc. - there are many, many determinants). yeah, it is even worse - i meet people who don't know where exactly they are going.
so.
in the 90's (and earlier) nepaleese where the most friendly in the world.
now you can see on the movie how nepaleese are (and it is not an exception).
thanks to such "travellers".

and unfortunately this is coming to the "states", i see.
and - as i wrote above - i'm not surprised.
i'm just upset.
sorry - i'm f*cking upset.

do we want to change all the world that way?

Yes, foreigners behaving badly is a completely new phenomenon, and didn't exist at all before the era of smartphones and selfies. The phrase "ugly American" has existed for only the last 10 years. It was so much better when people in developing countries were poor, knew their place, and showed a friendly face to all tourists, no matter what. Completely agree.

Not sure I understand how smartphones are relevant, then.

If we are going to trade disparaging idioms, there's a saying in English, too: you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.

i see :P
you are focused on the "smartphone", not on the main goal.

> you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make him drink.
lovely :)
ideal description of the situation with such tourists on their vacations.

> disparaging idioms
you miss the smiley.

a fellow commented: someone bewildered by prosperity, first getting the hump, than escaping and crying "pleeeease, pleeease" in front of real danger. and her brave son - really brave escape. funny.
it has to fall.
guess what.

So now you're back to smartphones, and away from "quantity makes poor quality. that's all."?
