Christian, are you sure about the worms thing? I remember about 3 years ago I was talking to Vero who used to host all the cyclists on Warmshowers, and who worked for the EU health something something. She told me worms were still a big issue with the local population. I don't remember the details, though, perhaps you know more.

Amoebe definitely a big issue if you catch one, my friend did, she was chained to her bed/toilet bowl for a week in Qalai-Khumb.

Tour operators tell me about 25% of their clients come down with diarrhea. Some of it mild, some of it making it impossible to enjoy the ride.

There was a massive deworming campaign with international support and millions of doses of free meds. Hopefully that greatly reduced the prevalence.

As for why it was so prevalent, I don't have the medical journal article in my hands, but I did hear something about the infections being mostly about lots of contact with worm-contaminated farm soil. So, very relevant for most Tajiks who work on or near farms, but not so much for people like me.

If it is a problem for expats and tourists, then they must be keeping it private (somewhat understandable, it does sound horrible), as opposed to the sitting on the toilet for three days ordeal (which is hard to hide).

Maybe it seems to be too easy but it is the correct form.

That what's on the picture it's a big bulls....t. Nothing to do with the reality.
