Khatlon accommodation reports

Post by steven »

So far we have not heard many positive reports about hotels in Khatlon, Tajikistan's southern province. If you have stayed somewhere, please let us know how it was!

We summarize all travel intelligence in the Khatlon travel guide article.

Re: Kulob accommodation reports

Via e-mail:

Kulob, Sano Guesthouse. USD 20 for bed and breakfast with shared bathroom inc. shower (though we were the only guests).  The room looked nice enough for the money, but on closer inspection it was quite filthy (especially the mattress), mouse-infested and had potentially lethal wiring, including a bare flex on the TV, which one was expected to introduce to the uncovered outlet on the wall!

To add insult to injury in the morning, USD 20 per person was demanded, whereupon an argument ensued.  We paid USD 30 for an easy life.

My partner and I attempted a train trip to Khatlon province a couple of weeks ago. It was way too hot in August and we would love to go back in winter. We only made it as far as Bokhtar/Kurgon-Teppe, as we nearly passed out in the sauna-like and slow train. We stayed at Sairi Orzu Hotel, where we had a great room with two huge beds and AC, and a bathroom with hot water. The staff were friendly, it was in a central spot of town and it cost 120 somoni/US$12.50 for the two of us (no breakfast). There was a terrific restaurant opposite on the river. It cost 10 somoni each for a taxi to the hotel from the train station. We returned to Dushanbe on the very comfortable Asia Express bus.
