pamir highway and small side trip to Afganistan if possible

Postby olilux » Sun Dec 25, 2016 11:55 am

hallo,

I plan to travel Pamir highway next year from Dushanbe to Osh and would like to ask a few questions

I have seen that Pecta and Meta are able to organise the car + driver. better to use Pecta or Meta?
Then I would like to go just one day in Afganistan just to have a flair of it
. is it better to cross in Khorog or in Iskhashim. What to do in one day ? How to organise the trip on the afgan side? Security is it OK if I stay to too far away from the border so just in the first town and then back to Tajikistan.
is it easy to get the afgan visa in one day in Khorog?

What are the best place to stop along the pamir highway? Khorog, Ishkashim, Langar, Bulunkul and Murgab

Thx for answer

I don't think it matters much as they all use the same pool of drivers. You might try booking through Caravanistan, as Steven seems pretty confident he's got the best prices.

So far as I know it's still easy to get a visa in Khorog, and same day should be possible.

There are lots of little places to stop as you drive from Khorog to Murghab via Langar, and your driver/guide will probably have a good idea of where to go and where to stop. Sorry if this sounds vague, but there really are lots of hotsprings, fortresses, petroglyphs, etc., all along the road, and your driver or agency can probably make suggestions when you book. Or just take a look in your Lonely Planet.

Yup, definitely cheaper than Pecta and META :-)

Hi, I am looking at doing something similar but travelling from Osh to Khorog. I appreciate there is an abundance of different sights on the route but how long would you recommend taking to do the trip in order to get a good overview? I was looking at five days - is this too short a time to really enjoy the experience or is it too much time? What would you recommend?

Hi,
Although it is personal to say you where to stay and what to do. Based on my own preferences i would say that i would definitely do:
1) one day stop in Karakul
2) one day stop in the place called Gaparjopa where you can stay at Yurtstay with friendly Kyrgyz nomads. It is about 5 km away to the east side from Alichur village. http://paramountjourney.com/wp-content/ ... _7152B.jpg
3) Langar village, to check the upper petroglyphs of caravans which is badly known by travellers (including some guide who used to work for 15 years in pamir, yes meet such guy)
4) do a short trek to the Engels peak, it takes a day from Langar or Hissor if you are in good fit
These are some spots that are not highlighted in the guide books.

Apperently there is significant fighting just 25 km south from Ishkashim linked to the talib spring offensive (at Zebak):

I am in Khorog right now and word is the Taliban are steadily advancing on the other side of the river. Not a good time to be crossing into Afghanistan from here.

I appreciate things change quickly but could there be an issue of safty in Khorog itself?

I think not. Things are quite peaceful and normal here but people are tut-tutting about news from across the border.
