Fann/Fen mountains - 7 lakes

Post by gatsby »

Hi
Looking to spend 2 nights in Tajikistan in mid April now that the border crossing by Samarkand is open. Looking at going to see the 7 lakes. Been in touch ZDTA and they suggested 1 night homestay at the 4th lake and then hike up to the 7th lake and camp overnight. To meet seems it would be pretty cold up there at 2400m(?) in April. Anyone hiked from the 4th lake to the 7th lake? It looks like you just follow the road. How long does it take and what is the gradient like, the person I am traveling with is not trekking fit. Also how predictable is the weather up there? Don’t want to be caught in a snow storm. Want to do more than just a jeep up from the valley for the day. Thanks in advance for any comments.

Yeah, you just follow the road between the lakes. The biggest altitude gain is probably between the 6th and 7th lakes. I don't know what "not trekking fit" means, but I was able to do the round trip with side excursions adding maybe another 300m vertical in 8 hours. I expect that most folks adventurous enough to be traveling in the region will be able to make the walk up to the 7th lake. You can get altitude readings from Google Earth, which may help you determine altitude gains.

I was there in mid-late October, and while the nights were cold it was nice enough during the days (and you'll get more sunlight than I saw). I wouldn't be too worried about the weather, though anything is possible. I imagine there will be still be snow in the mountains and that the spring melts have yet to begin in earnest, but I could be wrong. I'm sure ZDTA can give you more accurate information about the kind of weather you might encounter.

Thanks mate,
great photos and descriptions. Pretty much ended up reading about your entire trip across Asia. Won't tell the wife about wolves... :) By trekking fit, i meant she is not used to climbing hills as we live in a pretty flat city and have become a bit lazy :( How did you get up to the 4th/5th lake? did you use ZDTA or a random person?

Every day there are some people who come down the valley to go to the market in Penjikent, then in the late morning and afternoon they go back home. So there are share taxis that come down the valley in the early morning, and share taxis going back up later in the day. I caught a share taxi to Padrud. They left from a lumberyard just below the market in Penjikent. I talk a little about it at the end of my entry on Penjikent:
