Interesting news on China outpost in Tajikistan near Pamir Knot

Postby bwv812 » Wed Feb 20, 2019 10:07 pm

It's old news that Russia has had a considerable military presence in Tajikistan in order to protect its security interest in the Tajik-Afghan border, but it appears that China also has an outpost in the Pamirs to protect its interests. Apparently this outpost has been there for perhaps 5 years, and probably escaped more notice because it's quite remote (southeast of Murghab, near Afghanistan's pamir knot, and not near the M-41 or the Wakhan Valley). Part of their operations seem to include patrols inside Afghanistan, as German tourists in the Afghan Pamir have reported being stopped by them in 2016 and others have seen Chinese tanks in the Afghan Pamir.

the chinese built military barracks (2017) in the place where the hot spring and old soviet mini-post had place in kyzyl rabot.
at the gate i was talking to a tajik officer, but have seen over a dozen of chenese people (in civilian uniforms, they speak very poor russian).

In the Afghan Wakhan Corridor at least, the influence of China is impossible to miss. Especially in the Kyrgyz camps everything is Chinese branded. Anything electronic they have managed to get their hands on is Chinese and the solar panels that charge them are Chinese. When we stopped by at the border checkpoint with Tajikistan near the end of the corridor the Afghan officers had just received a delivery of flashy Chinese motorbikes. They didn't look suitable at all for the terrain, but it's clear that the Chinese are trying to influence the people there.

We were also told a few times that the Chinese are constructing a base at the far end of the corridor near their own border. Their presence is certainly rising there.

That ties in with this topic about a road to China being built through the corridor: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=5869
