Camping around Mary/Merv

Post by thijsd »

Since the borderguard explicitely told us we cannot overnight in Mary on our transit visa, we're looking for other possibilities.

We have our own tent, so camping is maybe possible.

Does someone know a good hidden spot around the city?

Thanks a lot!

How is he going to stop you from staying in Mary?

My thought exactly :)

But he was mentioning if we encounter an angry officer we can get into trouble, because our route from Konye-Urgench to Saraghs does not have to pass through Mary.

Camping is probably a better way to get the attention of police than staying in a hotel or guesthouse or whatever.

I have camped within the Merv archeological site. It ended up being a very scenic campsite and it was quite easy to hide there. Just make sure not to leave any traces or damage the historic remains of the city so many more generations to come can enjoy this historic site. Besides that you can basically camp anywhere in Turkmenistan as the country is so sparsely populated...

We finally stayed in the hotel near the train station (Myhmanhana). The one with the yellow and green sign on top.
10 dollar for a double room with smelly bathroom. A local guy paid 10MNT for his room.

We had no problems at the border afterwards, they were super friendly!

Thank you all!
