Dinosaur Plataeu

Post by Joey1234 »

I'm visiting Turkmenistan on a 5 day transit visa from the 8th. My main 2 sights are Darvaza of course and Merv, but would love to see the dinosaur footprints in the Far East (potentially a day trip from Turkmenabat?) if this is even doable? I have no idea how to go about it outside of looking when i reach the city, but worried with the time constraint. The other question is accessing Merv, is it best to find a taxi in Mary and pay for them to show you around? Or is there a better solution?

Any help appreciated!

I don't know about the dinosaurs, but there is a train station at Bayram Ali — a few kilometers from the historic sites at Merv — and you may be able to skip Mary entirely. There are also bus services between Mary and Bayram Ali as well as shared taxis. It's definitely possible to explore on your own.

Dinosaur plateau is usually a 2-day trip: I don't think you can manage it in 1 day there and back. Besides, how will you find the footprints without a guide?

You can also find dinosaur footprints in Tajikistan, that will be easier and cheaper.

Great, thank you both for your responses! I think that it will be pushing it for sure, so ill check out the prints elsewhere. Thanks :)

The link to visiting Merv won't work for me unfortunantely, but is it something i will need a guide for? Or could simply hire a car to take me around the sights? As I understand its very big and on foot is not possible?

Merv is pretty big, but it's certainly possible to do it on foot, especially if you're used to doing a lot of walking on your travels.

Don't know why the link isn't working for you, but here's the map from the train station to the Tsarist santorium to the main attraction at Merv:

Hi to all.

I post many interesting articles about Lebap region of Turkmenistan. Specially about Turkmenabat city and where in region people could go and take a rest.
One of popular rout of local people is Koytendag village with visiting on the track such places like "Astana-Baba" mausoleum, Gainarbaba lake with hydrogen sulfide source in the lake, it is a holy place, and finally "Dinosaur plateau"
In spite of this, beside from the dinosaur board, there are many interesting places to visit.

On average, time will take:
1 day, early departure from Turkmenabat, on the way visit Gainarbaba, in the evening you will be in the village of Koyten, you can walk to the recreation center, where you can see the Chinar (lat. Plátanus) trees of many years, as well as the lake, which is also located in the village. For special extreme sports, you can swim in either Gainarbaba or in the lake in the village of Koyten.
2 day, the main program with a picnic at the end of the route. Arnap Grove, Dinosaur Plateau, Kyrkgyiz, Umbar dere. (In Umbar Dere, you can have a picnic or get-together after returning to the village.)
3 day. Early departure back to Turkmenabat. On the way back, if the car allows, go through Magdanly, through the mountains, there should be a nice, easy picnic and on the road.

The best trip time is from April 20, in the deep summer, there is nothing to do, there is little water, everything is dry, you can go to the clean ...

p.s. Dont forget to have high platform or rubber shoes it will be need at Umbar dere waterfall...

Hey folks,
any suggestions how to get to the footprints from Turkmenabat without own car? We have 2 days in our schedule to go there and think it is worth. We really appreciate every hint.
Thanks in advance.
