Thank you for your anser, bwv812. Obviously their safety concerns me a lot but as this is a travelling forum, I'm asking about that part alone. My route is long and Iran is a country difficult to bypass so if the situation remains tense, I will most likely travel through it without paying them a visit. No worries.

Fellow travellers,

I don't know if any of you is currently in Iran or has any confirmed information about the current state od things (beginning of October 2024, Israel-Iran conflict intensifying) but I would welcome all information regarding safety of visiting these days! I'm supposed to travel through Iran by hitchhiking and visit my friends in northern Iran. They are caring people with no independent traveling experience so I take their advice against visiting now as a sign of protectiveness rather than realistic assessment of the possible dangers...
So I'm asking you - any information on people travelling through iran independently right now? The prospect of a full-scale invasion on Iran seems unlikely but knowing Iranian law inforcement, other types of difficulties may arise. Context: I am a university student holding a European Union passport and have no ties to any country in the region. I've already been to Iran in 2019 and had no issues whatsoever.

Please, share your info and have safe travels!

Mikail
Wait with your journey. At least wait to the end of US election. In general situations is very tense. Being in Iran when the war starts is the last thing you want. All exit routes for you probably will be closed. If you have a plane ticket, try to postpone it. Turn off the news, so you wont be in constant tension about what is happening there.

How is the situation at the moment. And do you think it will matter if you are a girl or a boy traveling Iran?

I have been in Iran past three weeks, left maybe 5 days ago. Regarding the possible war and escalations, the situation is very calm, no difference to any other country. However I had a situation where I was attacked and robbed as a cyclist while wild camping near Tabriz. My equipment got destroyed and I couldn't continue cycling through Iran and they made my trip now so much harder because of the trauma, stress, all the logistics that I have to deal with now, etc. I can't even explain how much this f... up my current situation and traveling. The most unusual fact about the whole thing is that the robbery was organized by two policeman who saw that I have usd cash with me. I am not going here into details, but there are so many facts that I am 100% sure that two police officers are organizers and other two locals guys did the attack and the robbery.
There are many people who cycle through Iran without any issues every year and I probably just had a bad luck, but I think the security situation (pickpocketing, robberies) will keep getting worse, since poverty is growing (effect of sanctions). The official data in the last 5 years confirm that and I wouldn't go again until that changes.

Wow, sorry to hear you had this experience. I've never been to Iran so I can't give my direct experience, but my Iranian friends say the inflation there is getting even more completely out of control, which as you said probably contributes to the kinds of crimes that happened to you when people become so desperate.

As a fellow cyclist i hope you get the right support to overcome this.all the best

This kinda of bad experience happened in Iran in the past (2019).nothing to do with inflation or people being poor

One option (if you have time and will) would be to make some noise on the social networks (instagram is widely used if i remember correctly)so Iranians will support you as most of them are genuinely nice people and extremely nice with foreigners (too nice imo which make the relation not natural)

Just in case someone is considering going to Iran and missed it:
A French-Germany bicycle guy was arrested.

https://irannewsupdate.com/news/terrori ... erns-grow/

I have been recently for several weeks in Iran and even some days after the war broke out.
Security forces have become complete paranoid about Israeli spies.
No surprise, the Mossad seems to have infiltrated everything.

The risk of a "misunderstanding" is enormous after this war - as soon as you do not travel like a standard tourist (Hotel, public transport, main sites only).
