Crossing Iran - Pakistan border at Gabd-Reemdan

Post by Valentin.vak »

Hi fellow travellers.
I am currently trying to get to Pakistan from Iran on a motorbike and I really want to avoid the Quetta route since there is already snow. Gabd-Reemdan is listed as international crossing although I could find no reports of successful crossings there. Maybe someone here can shed some light?

quick message on a Pak keyboard to let you know that I did cross Rimdan border on June 30th, French hitch-hiker having a Pakistani e-visa and no NOC for Balochistan. Then you still need an escort and its more hectic than the well-organized escort at Taftan border. I spent three nights at Gwaddar police station before being sent from pickup to pickup and checkpost to checkpost all the way to the province border between Balochistan and Sindh (from where its roughly half hour way to Karachi)
Comparing with my memories of 2019, I'ld say its more comfy to travel along with the northern escort (Taftan-Quetta) than the southern one ;)
Take care and happy trips!!

About 3 months ago a polish couple in a fiat-van tried to cross that border. But where denied by the iranians (they went into Iran), the pakistani let them go after a lot of discussing but the iranians said they haid no computer-system to enter by van or car. They were back on the move to Quetta and Taftan, about 2000 kms detour. Then their van broke down near Turbat. It took days before they decided to let transport their van on a truck back to Islamabad to hope to repair it their. But the van is still in Islamabad. They came back home in Poland by air in the hope to get some info to fix the van. You can find them on Youtube: PIEROGI-travel Monica and Peter ! ! !

I have heard that the Taftan-Quetta border takes at least five days. Would you say Gabd-Reemdan is more time-consuming? And also, isn't there a direct bus to Karachi right across the border?

Has anyone else experienced this crossing?

The border crossing self is only a couple of hours, the five days includes the ride to Quetta, its one very long day and useally 2 days of driving. And the waiting for your NOC overthere in Quetta. If you are unlucky to arrive at closing days in the weekend you lose there also a day. All together this can take 5 days, not just the border-crossing !! I probably think Karachi is a little problematic with all the floodings, but dont know for sure. Google 'pakistan flooding-map" and you will see between Quetta (where you have to go for your NOC) and Karachi is very bad hit by the floodings !!

I crossed the border one week ago with my bycicle from Iran to Pakistan. Everything went very smooth and it took only one hour:

- Iranian side: they just registered the information in their system and put the exit stamp.

- Pakistani side:
* First check point: two police men controlled my passport and exit stamp.
* Second check point: two officials in a shelter check and make fotos of my passport/visa. One of them took me to the office.
* Office: they registered the information of my passport/visa in their system and requested me to show them a hotel reservation. One of them was very clear: "without reservation not possible to cross". I had a reservation of 2 days in Islamabad from my LOI. I showed them the e-mail with the confirmation, and they accepted it.
* Last check point: two police men made me wait (offering me a seat and something to drink) until I could continue (not sure what we were waiting for...).

In all check points they asked me, where do I go and how. I answered Karachi and with bike. They told me the road was safe and let me go with my bike.

I could cycle 3 days visiting Gwadar and Pasni. I could enjoy the hospitality of balochi people as I did in iranian Balochistan. Unfortunatelly, the fourth day, probably because a cyclist in these villages is still too remarkable, two police men were in front of my hotel to escort me (they told me they got the information that it was not safe for me anymore). Next 250 km I was transported with the police vehicle and 250 km I cycled with two police men following me with a motorcycle/car until I left Balochistan.

A cyclist from Belgium was cycling two days ahead and I think he had no escort. If you try to cycle unnoticed (not visiting villages, but just crossing the police check points and wild camping), it is more likely that you don't get escort (on the other hand you miss meeting local people). Special mention to the police men I met (around 50 in total), they were extremly friendly and helpful.

I took a belgian cycler in my car all the way from Taftan to Islamabad, and he told me some guy past the border in Gabd, but a couple of days later, an other was denied at the same border, i think he saw it on some facebook page, but dont know for sure, as i dont have FB.
I collected my Indian visa today after exactly a week in Islmabad. Good service with Visatronix and very helpful and nice girls overthere. Costs still 22650 rupees in cash (105 euro at the moment-).

I want to cross the border from Rimdan to Gabd. But when applying for a pakistanian visa, I cannot choose this border as my entry point on the form.
How did you apply for the Visa?

I cross the Rimdan/Gabd border, but in the online visa application I selected Taftan border. The e-visa that I received per e-mail afterwards said nothing about the border I selected for crossing, so nobody in the border could now about that. They just checked that the visa was valid and that I had an hotel reservation.
