Unlike in China, the guide does not drive your car in Iran. How closely the guide tracks you is up to the travel agency. We have had agencies who sold a cheap tour and then left people alone to travel by themselves (these agencies no longer exist, if you are wondering).

So ask around how much freedom you can get from different operators.

Thanks. I'm not so worried about being left to myself as the base logistics of getting me, my friend, and our car through Iran but also doing a loooooong detour off the direct route. It sounds like if I can find a guide willing to do the escort we can make it work. I will see what can be done.

A few questions:
Any Americans recently enter Iran via Turkey?
I'm traveling w a French national, and we'd like to enter via train that goes to Tehran.
I am a French resident w/ a US passport, can my travel agency guide meet me in Tehran or must they meet me at the border? Is an LOI acceptable or I need to go through an agency?
I will apply for my visa from the Iranian Embassy in Paris. I read it can take 1-3 months to get a reply and then go to the embassy to get the fingerprints done, and then you have 3 months to enter the country - I'd like to enter in early/mid october. I suppose I should wait till say mid-july to apply?

This is such a specific question you should get the answer from the tourist agency you going to use to enter Iran.
