Afghan Wakhan post-Taliban takeover

Post by ventureforthphoto »

I have been in contact with my Wakhi guide from the trip I took in 2018, Ibrahim Hamdard.

He says that tourists are finally starting to trickle back in now, post Taliban take over. Apparently there are a couple of Americans there right now (with two Taliban armed escorts).

He says that while the border crossing at Ishkashim is still closed, apparently you can cross into Kunduz province at Sherkhan Bandar. Supposedly the consulate in Khorog is issuing visas. (I would confirm this border crossing info elsewhere, it is not really in Ibrahim’s wheelhouse).

If you do end up going, I HIGHLY recommend Ibrahim. There are still loads of non-Wahki guides out of Ishkashim, but you will have a far more authentic experience with a local Wakhi guide like Ibrahim, and it will certainly be cheaper.

Here is his contact info again.

To be clear: touring in a traumatized Shia community with an armed Taliban escort is horrific cruelty. You are terrorizing people if you do this.
