Which Afghan Borders open?

Post by The_Horse »

I'm looking to enter Afghanistan (because I'm a selfish sociopath accordingto Stephen77 lol). The Pakistan border is open, so I'll be crossing from Peshawar. Are there any other international borders open? Ideally, I'd like to enter from Pakistan and leave through Uzbek or Tajik border. But there's a real dearth of information.

Thanks,

You cannot leave through Hairatan (Uzbekistan) or Sher Khan Bandar (Tajikistan). Both are closed for travellers, though open for some trade.

I’ve read some reports that land border between Tajikistan and Afghanistan is open. Some travelers have crossed successfully in the past few months.

How did it went?
We would like to cross it, but at the moment not sure about the entire safety situation.

Hi, I just crossed Afghanistan on a motorbike and want to share some information.

I entered Afghanistan from Pakistan trough Torkham border. It took a few hours on Pakistani side because they had no idea how to deal with me. (Tell them right away you need to go to the customs officer.) On the Afghani side however, it was pretty straight forward but very unorganised.

There are many checkpoints where the Taliban might stop you and ask for your passport. They stopped me at least 10 times in 3 days. All of them were very friendly and happy to see foreigners.

Border to Tajikistan is open for international travellers as well. It took a while tough because they checked my phone, luggage and it felt like everyone needs to check my passport.

Note that this is my experience and their mood can change from day to day.

Safe travels,

Jan

Does anyone have experience receiving a visa for Afghanistan in Tajikistan, thinking of entering Afghanistan first through Sherkhan?

Hi Gator, I'm interested in the same thing as you. From the recent reports I've seen on Every Passport Stamp FB group, trying for an Afghan visa in the embassy in Dushanbe is a waste of time and money. They might give it to you (for $100 or $200, reports vary), but as it's not an "Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan" embassy but rather "Republic" embassy, the Afghan border control does not accept it. Travellers reported Afghan border guards cutting it out... and replacing it with a "proper" one! Of course, with a new fee to pay, etc. But basically like a visa on arrival. HOWEVER this was done with the help of a mentioned fixer inside Afghanistan, who basically called people in the MoI and arranged it.
Iranian motorcyclists had their transit visas cut out and given (after paying again) 30-day tourist visas for $100.
I also read of a Russian national (it was either here or on EPS) receiving an Afghan visa at the consulate in Termez, Uzbekistan.
If anyone reading this has reliable information, would be happy to hear it.
