Hiring a car in Almaty, looking for others and police checks

Post by hillsaus »

Hi,
I will be in Almaty mid April and looking at hiring a car.
Anyone interested in joining my wife and me doing the Golden circle for about 5 days, message me, leaving around 18 April.
Anyone know about how bad the police checks are and having to pay bribes for so called fines?
Thanks

Police checks are very common. You don't have to pay if you didn't do anything wrong. But it's difficult to never do anything wrong. As soon as you see a sign announcing a village: brake! The speed camera is posted right at the sign so if you are going 2 km over the limit as you roll into the village, you are on the hook. Same when you leave. Long stretches with uninterrupted white lines are difficult to keep up too if you are stuck behind a bus.

Beware though that when approached by Kazakh (or most other ex-Soviet outside Georgia) police the good old socialist principle От каждого по способностям, каждому по потребностям (“From each according to his ability, to each according to his needs”) still applies -- with regards to foreigners the “needs” of the policemen increase massively -- after all they are only paid coppers (excuse the pun) !

At least the government provides some hints in English What to do when a traffic police officer stops you (speeding fines at bottom) and how to pay properly (spoiler alert: not in cash behind the shed  ) They even offer a 50% discount!!
Knowing all that significantly improves a drivers bargaining position.
