Visa in invalidated passport?

My son ave a chinese double entry visa. First used, and passport expires in slightly less than 6 monts, so getting a new one. If they invalidate the passport but not the visa page, do you think he will be able to use that visa with the new passport. Into/out of China via Torugart/Ishkestam.

Anyone had similar issue in the stans?
