Special Covid-19 period procedure: you have to make first an online appointment, book a date and time of your convenience to visit the PSB, and fill out an online application form.

You will receive online a confirmation of your appointment.
Officially the extension request must be 7 working days before visa expiry, but this is not strict - make sure it is before the expiry day though.
A free photostat machine is available at the PSB reception for additional photocopies.

Covid-19 special measure: upon arrival at PSB your temperature is taken and a form must be filled out (in English or Chinese) about your potential visit to Hubei Province or your contact with infected persons in the last 14 days and address and telephone number must be provided, but no signature (!).

Documents needed for extension:
- passport (empty page for the new sticker)
- photocopy of passport picture page and visa page
- application form filled out on line (downloaded from PSB website after you got your appointment confirmation) and printed out, dated and signed and pasted with a normal photo
- a special photo (the paper photo on the printed application form is a normal one 30X40 mm) which may be:
1. made at PSB office at a cost
2. done by yourself in 2 ways:

A. you make your picture and photoshop it according to the very strict photo requirements, then send it online to a studio (where they do photoshopping), and if they confirm that the photo requirements are fulfilled, you pay 5 RMB and they will forward it online to the PSB.
B. you go to a studio where you give your picture or they take your picture, they do the photoshopping according to the requirements, you pay 20 RMB and the studio will forward it to the PSB.

EITHER
- residence document when staying with private host(ess) (who must own and not rent the house) - this document may be obtained online by the owner and takes 1 to 5 working days
- photocopy of ID card (both sides) of host(ess)

- ho(s)tel stay document on the day of application

At the reception (no English spoken) your documents are checked and then you wait for your turn at the counter for foreigners where you may be asked questions (not all employees speak English).

It may be a good idea to be accompanied by someone who speaks Mandarin or Cantonese.
You will get a printed receipt serving as your passport replacement and indicating the date of collection (after 4 working days, but in Covid-19 period before 2 March: 7 working days). On that day the passport may be collected between 17:00 and 18:00 or on any consecutive work day during normal work hours. Collection may be by you with the receipt or the host(ess) or relative, both with the receipt (which is to be returned).
Payment (160 RMB) is upon collection at counter 8, officially only permitted by card, but in reality possible with cash.
Only 30 days extension were granted although I had asked for more since my original visa was for more days.
0 entries are granted although I had asked for 2 (like in my original visa).
A change of visa type is possible.
