Embassy report: Mongolian visa in Hohhot
Mongolian visa in Hohhot. I paid 405¥ or 420¥ (can't remember which) and it was ready in 3 days.
Obviously you don't have your passport so you can't book into new hotels or take Chinese trains.
Your receipt is essentially on a scrap piece of paper and only your pickup date and date is on it, no name. You need a passport to get into the consulate, so keep your 'receipt'. I had to wait outside the fence for over half an hour for someone to bring down my passport (I guess I was the only Australian passport at the embassy because the policeman didn't have my name). Also, note the typical two hour Chinese lunch break when the office is closed.

Re: Embassy report: Mongolian visa in Hohhot
July 2018:
Applied for a 30days tourist visa with a Slovak passport.
They only require to fill out the visa application form + passport size photo and a copy of the passport.
No itinerary, no accomodation needed.
I paid 340¥ and the visa was ready in 3 working days.
