Do you by chance remember the opening times of the embassy?
Do they need to keep your passport?
Cheers

Re: Update - Kazakhstan visa in Tehran
April 2015 experience:
(I post here a part of my blog article, if you are interested about the rest of the story about Iran, you can read it here).
Embassy located on the corner of Hedayat St/Masjed [GPS: 35.7779, 51.4515].
Hours: (hours in brackets are meant for receiving the documents)
Sun 14:00-16:00 (16-18:00),
Tue 10:00-12:00 (14-16:00),
Wed 14:00-16:00 (16-18:00).
You will need – to fill the form, given in the embassy; a copy of passport; 2 passport-sized pictures; 40$ cash to be paid in a bank, but we managed to arrange that we will pay in the embassy when receiving the visa. Just bring the exact amount, they don’t have change.
Our 30-day tourist visa was ready after 4 working days.
Also, I think, by default they want to keep your passport, but if you say you will need it then they let you keep it.
