I just received my 10-year, multiple-entry Chinese tourist visa, good for 60 days per entry, from the San Francisco consulate. This is the new default for US citizens based on a treaty that was signed in November.

This is convenient because we're planning to visit China at the end of a long Central Asia trip. Now, we don't need to chase down a Chinese visa in Bishkek or stress over the possibility that the embassy in Bishkek will randomly stop issuing tourist visas. We used Travisa, which was expensive, but use of a visa service is mandatory if you don't live near a consulate since the Chinese consulate doesn't accept applications by mail.
