China: How to apply for an visa as overlander (motorbike/car)

Postby murg » Sun Mar 24, 2019 6:32 pm

Whilst applying for Chinese Visa I had many questions, so I decided to write a summary how we made our trip work:

I hold a German passport & ride a motorbike with German license plates.

1) Get in touch with various travel guides (you will need them for driving your own vehicle in PRC)

2) Choose the travel guide with the best offer for you (Irkeshtam - Kashgar - Pakistan: 4 days, about 1800 EUR /per vehicle)

3) Guide will send you lots of information, including some forms you have to fill out

4) According to your travel dates you book flight tickets.

5) The guide sends you a hotel reservation list / LOI.

6) You send:

the official visa application
the LOI
the flight ticket
your detailed (made up for the flight) travel itinerary including a map (google)

to the embassy or, as we did, your local visa agency.

7) After a few days you get your visa. The flight tickets can be cancelled.

We applied for a visa entry date 26.05.2019 with a hotel reservation list for 6 days(nights)
The visa is good for travelling up 'til 14.06.2019 staying for 30 days after entry.

This has been a hastle, I hope this post can help future travellers!

Hey Murg

This is very helpful, I am currently in the process of trying to get my China visa. I am also riding a motorcycle, although going the other direction - entering from Pakistan and exiting into Kyrgyzstan.

I will have to apply in New Delhi as I am already on the road. I am sure this will bring its own complications.

I just have a question about the flights you booked. I know these are fake flights only for the purpose of obtaining the visa. So you made up a fake itinerary around these flights? Where did you say you were flying in to that would match the hotel reservations given by the guide?

Thanks

Jay

At First we defined the real travel Date i.e. 4th - 9th of June.
Than the fake Tickets where bought:
Home country - Beijing & Return. Date 3rd - 11th of June.

The Hotel Reservation of the Guide ist according to the flight Date.

Good luck in Delhi

Thank you especially for the cost information. I always knew it was expensive to bring a motorbike into China. But I had no idea it was that expensive.

The costs can bei reduced by travelling in a larger group.

Costs are a) fir the guide & b) the individual traveller.

If you are a group of.... Let"s say 10 people/ vehicles, the amount ist significantly lower as the guide costs are divided by ten.

But, true, it's Lot"s of Money
